If you had told me that, as a board game designer, you could capture the excitement of Formula 1 racing in a tabletop experience, I would have called you into the pit to talk about telling tall tales. But here we are with HEAT: Pedal to the Metal, a game that has had a brilliant response from critics.
The game is currently reduced to £44.95 at Zatufrom its usual price of over £62. And it sure is cheaper than a day of actual Formula 1 experience. Trust me, my dad is obsessed.
Every Sunday, both TVs were filled with racing cars from the time I was born until… well, I imagine it's still going on now that I've moved away. That makes me feel a little nostalgic, but at least I can bring that cozy Sunday fun to the kitchen table for Father's Day when it comes, and with £18 off.
While we haven't seen HEAT: Pedal to the Metal ourselves, Agency considers it capable of emulating a “real feeling of breakneck speed.” With its simple and fast deck building system, players hit the track in a 1960s Grand Prix. You play a number of cards equal to your current team to move around the track and you have to manage your hand, reducing gears in corners and gaining heat.
It's a fantastic-sounding system, which means that as much as you can accelerate and get to first place, maintaining it is much more difficult. It's a game where you try your luck like many of the best board games and balance speed and heat so you don't have to slow down so much that it costs you the race.
It looks like it really manages to deliver that sweat-fueled, Red Bull-funded racing experience without ruining it with what could have been Truly terrible game design.
