Four years after its launch, the US sales of Xbox Series X/s are behind those of their predecessor, Xbox One, at the same point of the life of the consoles. However, PlayStation 5 sales now firmly exceed PlayStation 4.
That is according to the sales data of the Circan Marketing Research and Technology Company (previously the NPD Group) in its latest monthly report. The executive director and analyst of the Circan Games industry, Mat Piscatella, summarized the company's discovery, which covers the US games and hardware spending until December 2024, in a long publication on Bluesky (thanks VGC).
When commenting on some of the most prominent reports, Piscatella wrote: “Through the first 50 months of each console in the US market (life until the date ending in December 2024 for the Xbox X/S and PS5 series) , Sales of the PS5 life unit are 7 percent ahead of PS4. In comparison, Piscatella said: “For 38 months in the United States (until December 2023), PS5 led PS4 by 6 percent, while the Xbox X/S series followed Xbox One by 13 percent.”
Circana's end of the year 2024 traces what Piscatella called 12 months “rough” for games hardware, and consumer spending fell 29 percent compared to last year. On a more granular level, PS5 hardware spending fell by 18 percent (although it was still the best -selling platform in December), while the X/S series and Switch decreased by 38 percent. However, this fall was “expected” according to Piscatella, given Switch's substantial time in the market, and PS5 and the X/S series are “beyond their sales peaks.”
Pisatella's complete summary of the last Circrana report on US games. And hardware trends can be found in Bluesky and is an interesting reading.
