Warning: The following features contain spoilers for The End of the Penguin (episode 8) so make sure you are up to date before continuing…
With a jaw-dropping finale, The Penguin has come to an end as we see Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb and Cristin Milioti's Sofia Gigante (formerly known as Sofia Falcone) in their final showdown. Tensions have been high throughout the season as they both claimed power in Gotham, but Oz emerged victorious when he sent Sofia back to Arkham.
But is this really the end or will the show return for The Penguin season 2? HBO has not currently given the green light on the matter, but that dramatic conclusion leaves a lot that could be picked up in a possible second season.
First of all, now that Oz runs Gotham's criminal underworld, it would be cool to see what he's like and the obstacles he faces on this journey. We doubt that things will go very well…
Another thing we highly doubt is that Sofía will be behind bars for long since she is too fascinating a character to keep under lock and key. Notably, at the end she received a letter from Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, who is her half-sister, and while we don't know what was said, perhaps it's a clue as to where Sofia's story is headed.
Of course, all of this could be building toward The Batman 2 instead of The Penguin season 2, with the show designed to bridge the gap between director Matt Reeves' first film and its upcoming sequel. The final shot of The Penguin sees the night sky illuminated by the Bat Signal, making it abundantly clear that the goal is to directly connect the show to the Dark Knight's return, which will now be in 2026 following delays.
However, there have been some comments made by those involved in the show indicating that there might be interest in a second season, if there is a story to tell (which from the above, it sounds like there might be).
For example, showrunner Lauren LeFranc detailed to The Direct what it would take to continue the Oz story on the small screen, saying: “I mean, we put everything on the table. I think to do a second season, we have to feel that we can get over ourselves. We have to feel like there's something else there to really dig into. I mean, I really care about all of these characters, even if they're terrible people.”
Meanwhile, star Milioti has expressed that she would love to reprise the role of Sofia, telling AOL that she would “love to play Sofia again.” It's unclear at this time if this would be strictly for The Batman 2 or The Penguin season 2.
One person who might need a little more convincing is the star himself, Farrell, who admitted to Total Film magazine earlier this year that while he loves playing Oz, the cost of prosthetics and the intensity of the role puts him off. leaves you unsure if you would like to play him. again.
When asked if he would be happy to return for a second season, Farrell responded, “I don't know, man. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but it affected me a little bit. At the end of “I complained and complained to anyone who met me.” heard saying that he wanted it to end.
However, given the popularity of the show, it's worth keeping your eyes peeled, and we'll of course keep you posted with news when we have it.
