We're still waiting for the second GTA 6 trailer after more than a year, but enterprising fans now have GTA 3 running on an old console if that's something they're interested in.
GTA 6 is real, we know, but except for a single trailer that was released over a year ago, Rockstar Games is keeping us waiting.
If the studio's parent company, saying it will “deliver something phenomenal,” or calling it “extraordinary,” has whetted your appetite for some open-world criminality, and you happen to be using the Dreamcast as your only gaming console, you're in in the middle of the most specific Venn diagram, and ready to enjoy.
“SURPRISE SURPRISE! The alpha version of Grand Theft Auto 3 running on Sega #Dreamcast (DCA3) is here! Here's an actual hardware screenshot I took of my DC while doing some physics engine optimization work,” Girgis said.
“Over the past few months, a diverse team of independent DC developers and GTA fans have come together to take on what seemed to many to be an impossible feat: porting GTA3 to the Sega Dreamcast.”
Girgis has promised more updates to come, but it's certainly impressive to see a game ported in its entirety between consoles, especially considering the older nature of both titles.
The port went live in summer 2024, and the team essentially reverse-engineered the PC port to determine if it could run on the Dreamcast, some of the developers told Dreamcast Junkyard.
If you're of a certain age, you probably won't remember SEGA's Dreamcast console. It launched in 1998 in Japan (1999 elsewhere) and was ahead of its time, pioneering the use of online multiplayer, downloadable content, and offering games like Phantasy Star Online, a console MMO.
Unfortunately, it arrived during the life cycle of the PlayStation 1 and when fans were anticipating the release of the PS2, and was never able to compete with Sony's sequel.
Unfortunately, the wait for the news of GTA 6 continues. After a year of silence since the first trailer, the game has already broken Rockstar Games' record for the longest gap between information and studio resources.
