But among the chase scenes, character introductions (and reintroductions), and heist planning, there's one small cameo that the cast of Critical Role wants to point out. It happens at the beginning of the second episode, where the gentle giant Grog (Travis Willingham) plays with some little children and manages to discover crucial information from them.
On the surface, it's a cute interaction. But Sam Riegal, the voice of the bard Scanlan, mentions that there is one small casting choice that makes him particularly memorable: “The little son of Travis and Laura [Bailey] “It is the voice of the child in the scene.”
“It's fantastic,” Bailey adds.
“In fact […] Laura plays the other girl,” says Riegal. “So it's Travis, Laura and their son all in one scene together, which is cool.”
In addition to the lead roles, all reprized by the Critical Role cast, The legend of Vox Machina features some notable voice actors, including Stephanie Beatriz, Cree Summer, and the late Lance Reddick (as well as Matt Mercer playing various NPC roles). But this little bottom kid might be the best. And it's a small way the cast shapes the show.
Although all of the Critical Role actors are executive producers of the show, not all of them write for it. Willingham and Riegal wrote episodes for last season, and Marisha Ray and Liam O'Brien joined this season. But still, everyone is an active participant in the writer's room from the beginning.
“We start each season thinking, These are the moments that would be a dream to achieve. recognizing that we may not get there, but trying to honor as much of the campaign as possible,” Ray explains. “I feel like it's gotten softer [in later seasons]. It's much more fluid. The writers we work with, also the artists, are getting to know these characters as deeply as we did at that moment. The process has become a much more well-oiled machine.”
The first three episodes of The legend of Vox Machina are available to stream on Prime Video now, and new episodes will be released on Thursdays.
