With the release of the latest book in The Witcher series, fans finally found out how old Geralt is, and it turns out he should be spending less time slaying wraiths and rotten demons and more time thinking about his pension.
For most of The Witchers' history, Geralt's age has never been specified. Sure, he has the silver locks of an older gentleman, but his monster-slaying skills don't exactly scream sexagenarian. But in Rozdroże kruków (“Crow's Crossroads” in English), the newly published ninth book in the series, we learn that Geralt was born in 1173, making him a respectable 61-year-old man at the time of The Witcher 3.
In a Reddit post by u/joa_08, many fans commented on how differently they had estimated Geralt's age. Some, like u/iwenyani, imagined Geralt “in his 50s,” while others saw him closer to 100 thanks to a line from Vesemir in The Witcher 3. For others, the biggest surprise wasn't Geralt's age. . , but the fact that this revelation means that Yennefer is almost 40 years older than him.
Given that the book's release almost coincides with the reveal that Ciri will take on the role of The Witcher 4's protagonist, it's perhaps unsurprising that Geralt will step away from her main character duties, with any major time jump from the events of The Witcher 4. Witcher 3 potentially. putting him in his seventies.
That said, developer CD Projekt Red has already confirmed that the plan from the beginning was for Ciri to become the series' protagonist, with story director Tomasz Marchewka explaining that “from the beginning we knew it had to be Ciri; he is a very complex person.” character, and there is a lot to tell here.”
