The first full trailer of the Until dawn The movie has arrived and it probably won't look like you expected. While Sony announced last week that the film would honor the game's legacy but feature an entirely new story and cast of characters, it wasn't clear what that meant until this trailer arrived. Turns out that means the movie will be a love letter to every kind of teen horror you can imagine in a combination of cabin in the woods and Groundhog Day.
Until dawnThe trailer begins conventionally enough: a group of teenagers arrive at a remote house in the woods, only to encounter a terrifying masked killer. The twist is that once they're all dead, they wake up earlier in the night to find they're being stalked by a completely different type of monster. After this reveal, the trailer opens, crossing all sorts of different horror subgenres, from zombies and found footage to monsters and ghosts, swapping out the film's style with each new horror.
This method of repeating the day but changing the horror is a fascinating way for the filmmakers to pay homage to the film's title game, without attempting to replicate what makes the game great. While the game's appeal lies primarily in allowing players to choose how the story progresses, giving it dozens of different branching paths, the film will add variety by swapping out subgenres. On top of that, the trailer also features Peter Stormare as the classic of the genre: a mysterious gas station worker who tells kids not to venture into the woods.
Of course, in the end all that matters is whether the movie is scary, funny, and good, but we won't know until it hits theaters on April 25.
