Spoilers for Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft follow. If you haven't finished the Netflix series, look away now.
For once, Lara Croft has a happy ending, or so we thought. Hayley Atwell's intrepid adventurer may seem calmer and surrounded by the likes of Zip, Jonah and Cam as the Netflix series comes to an end, but a surprise twist soon puts her on the hunt for her missing friend, Sam.
When Lara breaks into her apartment, we discover that Sam (who returns from the 'Survivor' trilogy of games, but never appears on screen) is missing. Interestingly, Sam appears to have been behind several stolen treasures, with newspaper clippings reporting on a black market emanating from dozens of countries.
Given that Lara and Sam's relationship is the only remaining dynamic that remains fractured by the ending of The Legend of Lara Croft, it seems like the second season is heading into darker, more personal territory. And it's fertile ground, born from Lara and Sam's stories across multiple mediums, that showrunner Tasha Huo is eager to delve into.
“I'm a big fan of Sam, video games and comics,” Huo tells GamesRadar+. “I'm excited to be able to jump into that story with season two. In a way, I see each season as a new lesson that Lara needs to learn to become the woman of the '90s.”
Huo continues: “So whatever the second season has in store for her, it will be a new challenge to further her development away from the troubled and vulnerable Lara of the 'Survivor' series and into this confident and resourceful woman of the '90s. “
While a second season has not been officially announced as of this writing, a 2023 article from The Hollywood Reporter suggested that the Netflix series received a “two-season order.” Let's hope this is a legend that continues for some time as we close the gap between Lara's early adventures and the icon she would become.
