The three best (and worst) video games of September 2024 are full of games that went unnoticed in a month of big releases. Most of the big titles did well, but not as well as these three gems. Apartment Story is a story-based simulation game. The situation is that there are three people in an apartment with a gun. The game involves managing meters by performing tasks such as shaving, showering, cooking, smoking, etc. The graphics make Apartment Story look like a chunky PS1 title. Our reviewer concluded: “I'm pretty impressed between the plot, the atmosphere and the mechanics.” It's a short game, so if you want a short narrative, definitely try Apartment Story. It earned a score of 90, making it easy to include in the What's Good section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games as of September 2024.
Astrobot

Did you play Astro's Playroom, the free game that came installed on your PS5? It is a short 3D platformer that shows off all the cool features of the PS5 DualSense controller. Astro Bot is the sequel. It's much longer and it's incredibly fun. Each level introduces some type of new and unique mechanic. PlayStation systems haven't had many great platformers since the PS2, so Astro Bot feels very fresh. Our reviewer called it “a strong contender for Game of the Year, a must-have for every PlayStation owner.” Astro Bot is the highest-scoring game in The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games of September 2024.
Frostpunk 2

Frost Punk 2 is a post-apocalyptic city builder. It is the sequel to the Frostpunk story, which focused intimately on the survivors of its alternate history. Frostpunk 2 expands outward and looks at the development of civilization as a whole. It's less about simply trying to survive and more about rebuilding. Our reviewer's only complaint is that the game can be overwhelmingly complex for some. They found Frostpunk 2 to be “addictive and unique to the genre.” This is the first city builder we've featured in a while on lists like The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games of September 2024, so definitely check it out if you're curious.
