Proxi is a dream life simulator where players seemingly train an AI to create worlds from their memories. Players record a memory through text, known as a “mem”, which the game interprets and forms into an animated scene using assets created by the developers (and eventually by the players as well).
Players can then edit these scenes to modify the details. Players then “train their Proxi's mind with each new memory” by placing them on a memory timeline and mind map to create connections.
The trailer shows that players can add friends and family representatives to their world, play together, and export them to other worlds; Minecraft and Roblox are used as examples.
On BreakthroughT1D's Twitch stream, Wright explained why he wanted to use real gamer memories for a personal experience.
“I found myself getting closer to the player,” he said. “It's kind of a saying I've always followed: no game designer has ever been wrong to overestimate the narcissism of their players.”
He laughed, “Clearly the more I can make a game about you, the more you'll like it.”
BreakthroughT1D is a global organization that funds type one diabetes research, with a Twitch channel of talk shows and podcasts. The broadcast was hosted by Simmers Arielehm and Emily Morganti.
The studio's website indicates that Proxi is coming soon and does not list the platforms.
Wright seems interested in having Proxi explore the different perceptions and philosophy of memory. It certainly seems like a powerful tool and a smart concept, although six years after its initial reveal, the perception of AI has changed dramatically. I suspect Gallium Studio has an uphill battle explaining Proxi in its entirety.
AI is changing the future of game development as it becomes widespread across the industry. Recently, Google introduced its Genie2 tool that it claims can create playable 3D worlds.
