The Thing Remastered, a remake of the 22-year-old cult classic survival horror shooter, has been released courtesy of retro remake master Nightdive Studios.
It's worth noting that the release was leaked before its reveal at the PC Gaming Show, but we won't focus on that now. The point is that the game is now available for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam, GOG and Humble. Hurrah!
There's also a new trailer accompanying the game's release that beautifully shows off the game's visual and performance improvements. Being a remaster and not a new version, it is practically the same game, but the fog of the PS2 era has lifted and now you can also enjoy 4K resolution and “up to 120 FPS.” It also looks like all platforms will benefit from improved lighting, models, textures, and animations.
In case you're not familiar with the original 2002 video game, it takes place after the events of John Carpenter's classic 1982 horror film of the same name, putting you in the shoes of Special Forces soldier, the Captain Blake, who is sent to investigate the Antarctic Outpost where so many terrible things happened in the movie. Cap' finds himself really hoping that the movie people have double-clicked on the titular alien who changes shapes when he arrives.
Nightdive announced the remaster back in June without a set release date, so we get the near-surprise we have today.
