A new version of Catan will arrive in spring 2025 and will give the long-running board game a facelift.
As the sixth edition of the board game since the series began in 1995, this update focuses on “modernizing the Catan brand for today's players,” according to CEO Guido Teuber. However, that doesn't mean that the essentials are changing: those iconic mechanics have not been altered. Instead, the art and the rulebook are the focus.
In addition to an overhaul that rebuilds the game's tiles, cards, and packaging from scratch, the instructions have been simplified with clearer examples that will apparently help newcomers adapt faster than before. Catan's storage solutions have also taken a step up a notch with eco-friendly box trays and organized card holders to keep everything in order (a perennial thorn in the side of the best board games).
Catan CEO Benjamin Teuber said the team's goal “was to improve many parts of the player experience without redefining the game: redesigning our packaging, evolving the game's art across all components, focusing on functionality, and even reimagine the rulebook to simplify learning.” It was of utmost importance to us to maintain, of course, our father's brilliant and still contemporary game mechanics. [Klaus Teuber] created 30 years ago, at the same time giving the game a new look and updating it to today's standards.”
A couple of the standout expansions, Seafarers and Cities & Knights, have also been given a fresh lick of paint in a style that matches the new edition. It is not clear if more range will be updated.
While I don't think Catan was in dire need of a makeover, I can't argue with the results. The sixth edition is noticeably more vibrant and full of life than its predecessor, but still pays homage to that instantly recognizable cover illustration. The cards also have a much cleaner aesthetic, which adds to that “modern” feel.
We don't have a precise release date for Catan 6th Edition yet, but we know it will be released in 'Spring 2025', so it's not that far away.
