The highly divisive 2023 horror film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey angered Disney fans as soon as its first gory trailer dropped, but producer Scott Jeffrey says they actually worked very hard on the film, so much so that The director became physically ill.
“We had to toughen up, especially on Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey,” says Jeffrey in the new issue of SFX magazine, which features Daredevil: Born Again on the cover and hits newsstands January 29. People said we were lazy about all this. People might not like it, but no one was lazy in making it. We had so many problems. [Frake-Waterfield] “I threw up on set, it was very stressful.”
The film first came about when Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain, meaning anyone can use the character's name and likeness, even in a gore-fest like Blood and Honey. Although the gory version of childhood icon Pooh Bear and his friend Piglet turned out to be a hit with horror fans, Disney lovers weren't too impressed. However, Jeffrey feels that many of the people spewing hate at the film never gave it a chance.
“No movie is easy to make. Some people see those Winnie-The-Pooh movies and want to hate them before they've even seen them. It's like, 'Well, you're going to hate them, right?' “You're not going to have a good time talking about them so negatively, so stop,” added Jeffrey, who co-founded Jagged Edge Productions with Frake-Waterfield. “Anyway, whatever. They'll do what they do. But we have an audience and hopefully they'll keep coming back.”
However, it seems the filmmakers didn't let the backlash get to them too much, as they've since released the sequel Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey II, as well as starting an entire franchise of Disney movies turned slashers. Next up in Jagged Edge's Twisted Childhood Universe is a twisted version of Peter Pan, portraying Peter as some sort of angel of death and Neverland as the Afterlife.
Officially titled Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare, the film follows Wendy Darling as she attempts to rescue her brother from the evil Peter Pan and the heroin-addicted Tinkerbell. Yes, you read that right.
