One Baldur's Gate 3 developer has a peculiar tone for the game's “canonical experience”: a character/class combination that I must admit I never considered.
The answer to which of the original Baldur's Gate 3 characters is most closely connected to the game's story has been a highly controversial topic of debate since its release. Editorial director Micheal Douse, however, takes an unlikely stance.
Playing BG3 as a durge bard is the canon experience IMHO, I'm happy to debate thisSeptember 27, 2024
Now, Dark Urge is as reasonable a choice as any: its attachment to Act 3 characters like Orin and Gortash means the character is quite involved in the narrative, and there are plenty of Durge-specific cutscenes and dialogue action that they certainly make them just as sensible a release as Astarion or Shadowheart.
But where Douse goes off track, at least for me, is in his choice of class. The Dark Urge is fully customizable, meaning you can choose whatever race and class you want for your version of the character. Bard, therefore, could be a completely worthwhile suggestion if it weren't for one key detail: the default Dark Urge is a Dragonborn Sorcerer, which is why you see the character so often portrayed as a white lizard with long, flowing robes.
Class choice is also a matter of personal opinion more than anything else, and while my Bard was at the center of perhaps the The best possible Baldur's Gate 3 party(and I also recognize the validity of Paladin, which seems to be the most popular class of all the others), the idea of a Bard being the default Drive is peculiar. Douse suggests that he is happy to debate anyone about his choice, although his cowardly decision to block their responses suggests otherwise.
The Baldur's Gate 3 studio wanted to make 2 role-playing games at the same time, but its developers “were swallowed up by the ambitions of the one we want to release first.“
