Earlier this week, it looked like we might have had our first glimpse of what nintendo switch 2 it might seem thanks to mockups produced by accessory manufacturer Genki that were shown at CES 2025. Although it was originally claimed that these mockups were modeled after real objects, that may not be the case.
In an interview with a Japanese media Game*Spark (highlighted and translated by Automaton), a Genki representative reportedly admitted that the Switch 2 cover accessory the company had on display (not the mockup) was created based on leaks, and its size is not final. What's more, the interviewee apparently said he had not seen the actual console. This seriously calls into question the legitimacy of the viral mockups: how could the company model them after the real console, but would apparently have to create a cover based on leaks?
Nintendo has also finally stepped in to address the situation, although it is yet to reveal the actual console. The company issued a comment to the Japanese media. Sankei Shimbun (translated by Automaton) saying that the images and videos that emerged from CES 2025 are “not official.” To be fair, that's not a surprise – it was always clear that Genki was presenting mockups rather than real hardware – but just in case there was any doubt, Nintendo also reiterated CNET that the “gaming hardware that Genki presented as Nintendo hardware at CES is unofficial and was not provided by us to the company.” (Thanks again, Automaton).
So where does that leave us? Obviously, Genki apparently created the mockups based on other leaks rather than an actual look at the console, which gives less credibility to the viral creations, but doesn't necessarily discredit everything if the leaks you were looking for end up being accurate. Nintendo's opinion is interesting, but its statements do not completely rule out the mockups as inaccurate; apparently it simply clarifies that the images and videos were not of an official product made by Nintendo, which we knew.
Once again, it seems that we will have to be patient. Former Nintendo marketing directors Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang have expressed that believes that the company will not change the date it already had in mind to reveal the console, even with all these supposed leaks and rumors going around.
accessories manufacturer Genki already expressed that he “didn't expect so much media attention” for his Switch 2 mockup because he thought that all the information had already been leaked.
