A new step for SteamOS
Valve has announced that the company will begin allowing third-party wearable devices to license SteamOS. This step will start with Lenovo's new portable device, Legion Go S.
At CES 2025, Lenovo revealed a special version of its upcoming Legion Go S handheld called “Powered by SteamOS.” As the name suggests, it uses the same operating system behind Valve's Steam Deck. It's a great option for anyone who primarily builds their game library on Steam.
Valve announced in a blog post that, along with the launch of Legion Go S, they are developing a beta version of the operating system. This update aims to improve the experience on other portable devices and users will be able to download it and try it out for themselves. In other words, SteamOS is expanding beyond the Steam Deck to other portable gaming PCs.
SteamOS is a great option for those with large Steam libraries, offering a smooth, easy-to-use interface that enhances the portable gaming experience. While it's not a requirement for portable PC gaming, it has gained a loyal following for its convenience and ease of navigation. What's more, it won't be limited to Steam Deck users for long; Soon, anyone with a compatible portable device will be able to install and enjoy it.
