A fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie is on the way, with a release date of spring 2027.
As reported by Variety, Paramount is currently preparing for a new movie, as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opens in theaters this weekend.
Fans have already been speculating about what new characters will be introduced in the third film's post-credits, who will no doubt be the focus of the inevitable fourth film.
The first two Sonic the Hedgehog films have earned a combined global box office total of $725.2 million, and the third film is expected to top the box office this holiday season.
Plot details for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 are obviously being kept under wraps for now, so it's unclear who from the cast will be returning.
Jeff Fowler has directed all three Sonic films, with Ben Schwartz as the voice of the titular blue blur and Jim Carrey as the antagonist Dr. Robotnik.
The third film features Shadow the Hedgehog from the game Sonic Adventure 2, voiced here by Keanu Reeves.
“Sega and Paramount more closely align the game and movie worlds for an authentic Sonic game with Keanu's cool touch,” I wrote in our Eurogamer Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie review.
“Sonic 3 is a smash hit and a fitting end to the Year of Shadows. It's fun and self-aware, balancing pop culture appeal with the authenticity of its source material, while its flashy action thrills alongside a unbridled sense of genius that is only enhanced by Reeves as Shadow.”
