Warning: The following contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3…
If you've already seen the third Sonic 3 sequel, you'll know how fantastic Jim Carrey is in it, pulling fashionable double duty as Ivo and Gerald Robotnik. In fact, our own review of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 says Carrey steals the show.
It's so good that earlier this week, Sonic 3 writer Pat Casey tweeted that Carrey deserves an Oscar nomination for his performance, and later told GamesRadar+ in an interview that he's serious about the comment.
In fact, he thinks it's time for comedy films to get more recognition at the Academy Awards, which notoriously favor other genres like drama. As Casey states: “It's a very short list of actors who could have pulled this off, there's possibly only one name. Comedy is difficult, and the fact that the Oscars focus almost exclusively on drama is a little silly.” .
“It should be a celebration of cinema and comedy is a great genre, comedy is one of the main reasons people go to the movies, and well-made comedy should be honored. I mean, will he be nominated? Probably not .But I just wanted to throw it out there. The campaign starts now!
Co-writer Josh Miller is already on board the campaign, adding that “if Johnny Depp can be nominated for Pirates of the Caribbean, technically Jim played two characters in one movie and crushed it with equal force.”
It really is a brilliant performance and fans will no doubt be left wanting more of Carrey's Robotnik when the credits roll on Sonic 3. But there's one crucial problem: Ivo died when the Eclipse Cannon exploded, or so it may seem… watch , if we didn't see a body, is Ivo Robotnik really dead?
Posing that question to the writers, Miller teases that he might return one day: “We're hoping they make a zillion of these and who knows, for Sonic The Hedgehog 8… like with the Fast & Furious franchise, that's shown that no one really “You need to stay dead if you don't want to.”
Meanwhile, for Casey, whether Ivo is really dead or not depends on whether Carrey wants to return for another sequel: “I would say 'of course he's dead, it was a space explosion, he's completely dead… unless, maybe.' ..' That all depends on Jim, I think.”
