Pseudoregalia stole my heart with its retro gothic setting and expressive, dynamic platforming, and it seems thousands more agree with how well this Metroidvania performs.
After teaching himself how to develop games and working on the project for just a couple of months, lead developer Rittzler released Pseudoregalia last summer for just $6 and quickly made its creator a life-changing amount of money. Playing as a goat-cat-woman with a sickly cane, the game had players uncover the hidden secrets of a warped castle, and it’s been so successful that Rittzler previously said we’d see protagonist Sybil again “someday,” though there won’t be a direct sequel right away.
Now, the developer has announced another major milestone for Pseudoregalia: it has doubled its sales since March 2024 and sold over 200,000 copies since launch. “It literally never crossed my mind when I was making Pseudoregalia that I could hit 10,000 reviews on Steam and 200,000 copies sold in about a year,” Rittzler recently tweeted, “but shit, guys.”
Pseudoregalia now sits in an “overwhelmingly positive” rating according to over 10,100 Steam user reviews praising how it condenses a full 3D Metroidvania experience into just a few hours, while its fast, acrobatic movement makes it go by even faster.
Rittz reiterated that another release isn't as likely as one might hope. “I'm doing my best to recover enough to give you a new game,” Rittzler teased, “hopefully soon.” Considering that a game with as many features as Pseudoregalia was made in a handful of months, perhaps we don't have to wait too long now.
