Few cooperative board games carry more prestige than Spirit Island, so cutting it down to half its price is enough to make my eyebrows disappear to my hairline.
You can currently get Spirit Island for $44.99 at Amazon instead of almost $90, and that's just a dollar away from its lowest price. That's also a 50% reduction in board gaming overall. Considering it's widely considered one of the best board games to play as a team, it seems like a bargain.
Given that it arrives a couple of weeks before the Black Friday 2024 board game deals, it's also a surprise. Savings of this caliber are usually saved for the event itself, so it gives me hope that good deals are in store for us if this is what we're already getting.
Should you buy Spirit Island?
Like Scythe or Mysterium, Spirit Island is a board game with a batch of prestige. It's actually the type of game that many will point to if they know you're looking for the best cooperative board games. Because? Simple, really; It's fucking excellent.
As with many modern games, it offers numerous ways to win and doesn't force you to take a particular approach. It also features numerous spirits to play with with their own unique gameplay, so the replayability here is pretty high as well.
However, its theme is anything but predictable. Unlike many area control games, you're actually trying eliminate settlers on your board. It's a kind of anti-catan.
If you still think this is a little expensive, don't stress. The more focused and much cheaper spin-off, Horizons of Spirit Island, is $15.99 at Amazon instead of almost $30. That's a great option if you're not sure you want to commit, as it encapsulates much of what makes Spirit Island great in a smaller package.
