A little over a month later Making fun of something New this fall, Blasphemous 2 developer The Game Kitchen has announced that its charming 2023 Metroidvania is getting a free update and a major paid DLC on all platforms on October 31. The free update is called True Torment, and the “premium” DLC is appropriately titled Mea Culpa.
A new animated cutscene heralds the arrival of Mea Culpa, which kicks off with two “massive” new zones featuring new bosses that represent “some of the biggest challenges” in the game. These mysterious areas, described in a press release as featuring “strong winds” and “towering heights,” will offer new quests, non-playable characters, and ultimately tie into a new alternate ending for the entire game.
It seems the DLC is named after a new weapon, as it offers “ways to increase the power of the Mea Culpa” and teases “a new (but familiar) weapon and ability.” I expect we’re talking about the greatsword briefly shown in the trailer above. The nature of these upgrades remains unclear, but more prayers, equippable rosaries, and wooden figurines await us as well, so the RPG side of the game is definitely expanding.
Meanwhile, True Torment is headlined by New Game+, a much-requested way to re-experience Blasphemous 2 with custom difficulty options like stronger enemies and deadly traps. Three zones (Chorus of Thorns, Sunken Cathedral, and Basilica of Ancient Faces) are being “reforged with new challenges,” and several areas will be connected via new sub-zones that let you traverse the map more quickly. The Labyrinth of Tides, apparently a new combat challenge, will also be free for all players.
The free update comes complete with “a host of improvements” for the main character, including additional prayers and skills, as well as “quality of life improvements and achievements.” Blasphemous 2 Review He called the base game a sequel “as unsettling as it is unpredictable,” and it earned a high spot on our best-of list. The best Metroidvania gamesand it also ended up being one of my personal favorites, so these updates are very tempting even 14 months after launch.
Our own Joe Donnelly said last year that Blasphemous 2 has the most interconnected map I've seen since Dark Souls.
