Happy birthday, NYT Connections! Yes, here we are at game #500, 18 months after we first saw that grid of 16 words that needed to be rearranged into four groups. The NYT has duly celebrated this with a game that clearly celebrates itself, in that each of the answers is a reference to its place on the board.
However, while today's Connections are a lot of fun, I wonder if it would be wise to make the four groups their specific color with a blank space; for example, PURPLE RAIN, PURPLE HEART, PURPLE PROSE, PURPLE MIST for, yes, purple. A group like that, great. But four… well, it made it all too easy, right?
It's not that most of these blanks are difficult to fill in either; the only thing i didn't know was [yellow] JOURNALISM, but otherwise they were all very obvious, even the purple ones. I figured it all out in about two minutes, and I bet you did too.
How was today? Send me an email and let me know.
Answers from yesterday's NYT Connections (Tuesday, October 22, Game #499)

- PURPLE: GAMES WHERE THE NAME OF THE GAME IS SAID BINGO, MARCO POLO, TAG, UN
What are NYT connections?
On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final question since you'll be able to answer it through a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little breathing room.
However, it's a little more complicated than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, be careful with homophones and other puns that could disguise answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
