The new Lord of the Rings anime film appears to join The Joker 2 in the fastest theatrical run of 2024, as the film arrives on digital just two weeks after arriving in theaters.
The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim, which premiered on December 13, will be available on participating digital platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, on December 27 (H/T Deadline), just 14 days after its arrival on the big screen.
However, it's important to note that just because the film is headed to digital doesn't mean it will stop playing in theaters entirely. Similarly, Red One arrived on Prime Video this month, but continues to show in theaters.
Set 183 years before the events of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Rohirrim War follows Héra, the daughter of the Rohan king Helm Hammerhand, as she attempts to save her kingdom from the dark lord Dunlending. The film is directed by Kenji Kamiyama and stars voice actors Gaia Wise, Brian Cox and Miranda Otto from The Lord of the Rings.
The anime film has so far grossed $15.3 million at the global box office, compared to the film's estimated budget of $30 million. That sum seems quite small compared to the $6 billion grossed by the six series of live-action Lord of the Rings films, beginning with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and ending with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
However, more live-action adventures await us as Warner Brothers prepares two new Lord of the Rings films. The first, titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollumwelcomes back Smeagol star Andy Serkis, who will lead and direct the film, while Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will write the script. The Gollum movie is estimated to be released in 2026.
As for The Rohirrim War, the good news is that the digital version includes a lot of special content; Return to Helm's Deep: History Becomes Legend, Middle Earth and Anime: A Marriage of Creativity, and Héra: A New Heroine for Middle Earth.
