Apparently, Jack Black got really into his role as Steve while filming the upcoming Minecraft movie and spent his breaks from filming playing games. The film's director, Jared Hess, even joked that Black did his “best” to play the role.
“I mean, he was in his trailer every time he had a break, he was just rampaging through the Overworld,” Hess told Agency. “Torfi [Frans Olafsson, producer and Minecraft’s Sr. Creative Director of Entertainment] Set up a special server just for the crew. Jack became obsessed with searching for lapis lazuli, as he calls it. I mean, every day, it was like I showed up there to go over the scene in the morning and he was dressed like Steve playing. “It was kind of surreal to behold.”
So far we've seen some glimpses of Black as Steve in the trailers, and we have to admit that he looks like the best part of the movie. Loosely based on beloved games, the film follows four misfits (played by Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen) who are dragged into the Overworld, a cubic earth that thrives on the imagination. To return home, they will have to complete a magical quest with a craftsman named Steve.
Black previously joked to GamesRadar+ that he thinks he'll get an Oscar for his work on A Minecraft Movie. “Oh, you know I play Minecraft all the time. When I'm not filming, I play Minecraft because an actor prepares,” he told us.
“I like being in that Minecraft headspace. I like knowing the rules, and I like getting little things like, 'Oh, in the game you spike like this. You hit things like that,' and then I do it.” that in the movie. I think the members of the Academy will appreciate my research later. I don't want to jinx it, but I'm pretty sure I'll get an Oscar for this one…”
A Minecraft movie will be released on April 4, 2025. For more upcoming movies, here's our guide to upcoming video game movies on the way.
