Sony was incredibly fortunate to secure three Grand Theft Auto exclusives on PlayStation 2 (GTA 3, San Andreas and Vice City), but a former executive at the console maker revealed that the exclusivity deal was only signed because Sony was concerned about La Xbox entry into the console war.
Deering recalled feeling fortunate that “one of the deals we made was with Take-Two for the next three Grand Theft Auto games” because “at the time, it wasn't clear that Grand Theft Auto 3 was going to be as big as Lo was, because it used to be a top-down game.” GTA 3 defined an entire genre that is still going strong and made the franchise one of the biggest names in gaming, but no one could have predicted it 25 years ago.
“It was very lucky for us,” he continued. “And they really got lucky, because they got a discount on the royalties they paid. Those deals are not uncommon in industries with platforms. Even today with things like social media.”
For now, take a look everything we know about GTA 6 as we wait for more news on Rockstar Games' next blockbuster.
