As far as streaming app interfaces go, Google TV is one of the best out there, and its free channel offering keeps getting better as the launch of Google TV Streamer draws closer: there are apparently a handful of new channels to enjoy, as well as a revamped Freeplay interface to access them.
9to5Google has posted some screenshots of the new interface online, which appears to be a significant improvement over the Live tab where all of these free, ad-supported (or FAST) channels can currently be found.
The new interface allows you to access the full list of channels more easily, as well as giving you the option to browse by category: Recent, Popular, Dramas, News, etc. There is also a Favorites category where you can save the channels you like the most.
The Live tab isn’t going away – you can still find FAST channels here, along with live YouTube TV channels. It’s also worth noting that the Freeplay branding is still rolling out, so you might not see it right away – it should appear for everyone in the US in the coming days.
Hundreds of channels
While 9to5Google mentions new channels, it doesn't specify exactly what they are, and Google hasn't said anything officially either. New channels are now being added so regularly that it's hard to keep up: last week we received 14 more free channels, along with a hint about this Freeplay rebranding.
All of these new channels and other changes, such as the move of all purchasing options to YouTube, appear to be a preparation for the launch of the new Google TV Streamer, which goes on sale on September 24. The new device will replace the Chromecast devices.
There are now over 800 FAST channels available on Google TV, with over 150 available in the curated list offered by Freeplay. This return of ad-supported viewing falls in line with the recent trend of streaming services offering ad-supported tiers.
However, for now you can't get free channels or Freeplay on Google TV if you live outside the US, no doubt due to complications related to licensing issues. If you're not in the US and want to watch movies and shows for free (in exchange for some ads), your options include Amazon Freevee, Tubi, and Plex.
