Update: Developer Atlus' first original game since 2011's Catherine has surpassed its biggest and longest-running franchises.
After just one day in stores, Metaphor ReFantazio has already passed two huge milestones for what is arguably the best JRPG studio in the world right now. Atlus announced yesterday that its “all-new fantasy role-playing game Metaphor: ReFantazio has surpassed one million copies sold worldwide.”
To put it in context, this year's Persona 3 Reload became Atlus' best-selling game after selling over a million copies in a week. Metaphor: ReFantazio matched those numbers in a single day and quickly surpassed a much-hyped entry in arguably the developer's biggest franchise.
The PC numbers also paint a similar picture. According to SteamDB data, Metaphor: ReFantazio also attracted more concurrent players on its opening day than any other release in Atlus' relatively short run on the platform with over 64,000 people jumping in to beat up beasts and make fairy friends at the same time. time. The previous record holder was, again, Persona 3 Reload, which managed to attract 45,000 concurrent players, although I imagine that gap will grow as more people adapt to the new giant of the genre over the course of this weekend.
Original story: Metaphor: ReFantazio It's only been available for a few hours, but it's already surpassed Persona 5 Royal's concurrent player record on Steam, and it doesn't look like it's slowing down anytime soon either.
Studio Zero's Huge New Fantasy JRPG Was received critical acclaim when your reviews were posted earlier this week, including mine Metaphor: ReFantazio Review for GamesRadar+, where I gave the game four and a half stars out of five. It seems like your player count is set to reflect that, because it hasn't taken any time to rise to 38,713 simultaneous players on Steam – on a business day, hours after launch – and surpassing the all-time record of Persona 5 Royal peak of 35,474which set two days after its launch in 2022.
Despite coming from the creators of Persona 3, 4 and 5, Metaphor: ReFantazio is not a Persona game, although in some ways it certainly feels like one.. Still, Persona 5 Royal, the definitive edition of Atlus' 2016 JRPG, looks like next. He has steadfastly maintained his fan base for years, and there is a reason why he is widely considered to be one of the best JRPGs of all time. However, it's clear that Metaphor: ReFantazio could be on its way to being just as beloved.
As of this writing, Metaphor: ReFantazio's concurrent player count record on Steam still trails that of Persona 3 Reload, which reached 45,002 a couple of days after its launch in February. However, given that I've already had to edit the Metaphor album twice while writing this story, it's fair to say that there's a good chance it will outperform the remake yet.
