The Game Awards have confirmed that DLC, remakes and remasters are eligible for all categories of their awards, including Game of the Year.
The shortlists are expected to be announced tomorrow, Monday, November 18, and the FAQ page on The Game Awards website has been updated with new information to confirm that TGA judges are now considering “expansion packs, new seasons of games, DLC, remakes and remasters” as eligible for consideration.
“The Game Awards aim to recognize the best creative and technical work each year, regardless of the release format of that content,” the Website now says. “Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLC, remakes and remasters are eligible in all categories, if the jury considers that the new creative and technical work deserves a nomination.
“Factors such as the novelty of the content and its price/value must be taken into account.”
This now means that remakes like Silent Hill 2 Remake could be in contention, as well as DLC like Elden Ring's The Shadow of the Erdtree. Elden Ring won the TGA Game of the Year award in 2022.
It also means that games with seasonal content like Apex Legends, Destiny, and other live service games are also eligible, even if the base game was released several years ago.
Last year, Baldur's Gate 3 won the top award, and Alan Wake 2 also won several awards. The Game Awards 2023 broke its own viewership record, recording around 118 million live streams.
With 103 million live streams globally in 2022, that represents a 15 percent year-over-year increase for the show.
