“Supergirl is a mess,” Gunn said affectionately. In fact, that description of her is accurate to the comics' source material. Based on the DC miniseries of the same name, written by Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Evely, Woman of tomorrow begins with Supergirl flying a spaceship so far away from any yellow sun that her powers disappear, all in order to get drunk.
“I can't wait for people to see it,” Gunn said of the film, which is scheduled for release June 26, 2026. “I think it's a completely different and unique take on a superhero.”
Read on for everything else Gunn had to say about supergirlas well as his highly anticipated Superman movie, Green Lantern friends series Lanternsand a second season of Pacifier.
Supergirl: the woman of tomorrow
After getting drunk and stranded in deep space, Supergirl catches the attention of a stoic young space farmer, Ruthye, who makes a deal with Supergirl to hunt down the man who killed Ruthye's father and get revenge on him. Yeah, Woman of tomorrow is True value in space, with Supergirl as Rooster Cogburn.
“I saw Ruthye's screen test, with Milly Alcock, who's going to play Supergirl,” Gunn said, “and, my God, I'm so excited.”
He said that production in Woman of tomorrow has been “blessed from the beginning.” [Screenwriter Ana Nogueira] He came in and told me the story of supergirland it was one of the best releases I've ever heard. She immediately wrote it down. It came with a first draft that was great and has gotten better and better. And then [director Craig Gillespie] He’s been incredibly easy to work with and I can’t wait for him to come out.”
Gunn said the film fits closely with King and Evely's 2021 story. “There are some differences, because it's a three-act structure, so it's a little different than the [comic’s] structure, which goes through several stories. But it has all those main characters and themes.”
Supergirl: the woman of tomorrow It will begin filming in January, according to Gunn.
Gunn had little to say about the kickoff film for his new DC Films project, except to wax eloquent about David Corenswet, who plays Superman/Clark Kent.
“David Corenswet is going to blow people away. He is the movie star everyone dreams he could be. I don't think anyone really understands the depth of this guy's dramatic and comedic talent. He's the best physical action star I've probably ever worked with. […] He is an incredible actor. And Rachel Brosnahan [cast as Lois Lane]”I think you're going to die for her too.”
Cryptically, he promised that “it won't be long before we see a breakthrough.” [for Superman]but it won't be too soon either.” Superman It is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
The second season of Gunn's superhero show spun off from his 2021 film The suicide squad was put on hold in January 2023 so Gunn could focus on his new duties as co-president of the DC studio and on writing, developing and filming. Superman. But Gunn confirmed at the NYCC panel that Pacifier Season 2 is currently filming and he had taken time off from set to attend NYCC. Most of his comments about season 2 focused on its star, John Cena.
“John Cena has improved as an actor the same way I have; I've honestly never seen anyone improve that much in such a short amount of time,” Gunn said. “He was great in the first season. This season he owns it and he is incredible.
“It is a very different season from Pacifier. Very magical.” Gunn did not indicate whether he was speaking figuratively or literally.
The second season does not have a release date, but it takes place after the events of Superman, so we probably won't see it until late 2025 at the earliest.
News that Aaron Pierre (Rebel Crest, The underground railway) had been cast as Green Lantern John Stewart, alongside Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, it was revealed just a few weeks ago, and Gunn made sure to comment.
“Aaron Pierre is someone I've wanted to hire for a long time,” Gunn said. “People don't know it, but he was almost Adam Warlock. He is an incredible actor and I have really admired him since the beginning of his career. And when the time came, it was just fantastic. See him read with [Chandler] It was one of those miraculous moments where you go, Oh my god, I don't care what they say, I just love everything they say together..”
Gunn said that comic book writer Tom King gave the first speech about Lanternsand continued working on the series with writers Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof. “It came out very easily, very naturally. “It’s a very grounded show, a very real show, which is strange to say in a Green Lantern show.”
Lanterns It has no release date, but is expected to begin filming in 2025.
