Donald Glover wants his next Lando spin-off movie to be light-hearted and fun.
“I just want it to be fun. As a Star Wars fan, I think it's important that there's more fun,” Glover told the Wall Street Journal. “It's so hard to have fun right now. It's hard because there's so much serious stuff going on and those are the only things that connect us, oddly enough, so I understand why things are serious, but I think part of the human experience is that we have a responsibility to enjoy ourselves. And I feel like we're missing something in that regard.”
Lando Calrissian made his first appearance in the Star Wars franchise in 1980's The Empire Strikes Back as Han Solo's friend and the administrator of Cloud City on the planet Bespin, and was originally portrayed by Billy Dee Williams. Glover portrayed Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story, which tells the origin story of Han Solo and Chewbacca, in 2018. Although the film received mixed reviews, many praised Glover's portrayal of Lando.
A Disney Plus spin-off series was announced in 2020, with Justin Simien attached to direct. Simien later left the series, reportedly due to commitments to Disney's Haunted Mansion film. The show was later scrapped and reimagined as a feature film with Glover and his brother Stephen at the helm.
