Diablo 4 lead Rodd Fergusson was previously known for his work on almost all of the Gears of War games, long before his involvement in Blizzard's dark, loot-filled world, and has now spoken openly about what the game was like. plan for Gears of War 6. before its departure from developer The Coalition.
When asked about his opinion on the recently revealed prequel Gears of War: E-Day in an interview with Podcast Unlocked, Fergusson said “it's a little surreal that something is coming out about Gears that I haven't been involved in. You know, I passed “15 years with Gears of War and basically with all the games that were made, I think 9 or 10 in total.”
Fergusson said he was surprised by The Coalition's decision to explore the series' past, rather than continue a story that was only partially done in Gears 5, but was ultimately “really smart” because fans had been asking for see E-Day. the time when the Locust first emerged from the earth, for years. But as explained above, OG series developer Epic Games never depicted the events of Gears of War: E-Day because the team couldn't “do it justice” on the Xbox 360.
Things get juicier when Fergusson talks about the plans for Gears of War 6 he left behind since, surprisingly, the sequel would apparently take us off the Earth-like planet Sera for the first time. “Gears 6 was going to leave Sera,” he said. “That was something we were building on. If you pay attention to the history of Gears 5, you find the UIR [Union of Independent Republics] a kind of rocket technology. We were laying the seeds and the foundation so that, by taking over that UIR territory, we would adopt their space program. So what I wanted to do with Gears 6 is take you out of Sera to discover what that might mean for the rest of the galaxy, or at least the rest of the solar system. Not that you'd be jumping [between planets]but… it was old technology, from the Russian era, sputnik type, so we weren't going to start making Mass Effect with this. “It was really about 'let's take you somewhere new so you can experience what this looks like.'”
Gears of War 6 was not only going to space, but it was also going to have to deal with the ending of Gears 5, which made players choose between saving JD or Del, the first time in the series' history in which that the players impacted history. and the continuity that was previously very united. Fergusson doesn't reveal what The Coalition's plans were for JD and/or Del in the sixth main game, though he does note that the choice was fairly “close.”
While we won't be seeing a continuation of Kait Diaz's story anytime soon with E-Day still in active development, The Coalition has said that it still has its eyes on Gears 6 and won't be “retiring” from the story it started. .
