Christopher Nolan has decided to be a little more literal with his next epic, traveling back in time and adapting Homer's story. The Odysseyaccording to a new publication in Universal Pictures' X.
The revelation came after months of fans speculating about the filmmaker's follow-up to oppenheimerwhich earned Nolan his first Best Director Oscar along with the Best Picture award and five more awards on top of that. Despite speculation ranging from “helicopter movie” to “period vampire thriller,” nothing came close to the truth that Nolan tackled one of the most famous narratives in human history.
But while Nolan's choice of adaptation may be ambitious, he's certainly already assembled a cast that lives up to the hype. While we don't know what roles everyone is playing, we do know that Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o and Charlize Theron are on board, and there's still plenty of time for more stars to join the production.
The original story of The Odyssey follows the mythical hero Odysseus on his arduous and chaotic 10-year journey back from the Trojan War. Along the way he encounters all manner of strange and dangerous creatures, only to return home to be greeted by numerous suitors vying for his wife's hand. Of course, regular Nolan devotees can probably already find areas of the story to speculate about when it comes to how his non-linear style may make itself felt.
According to Universal's tweet, we can (unsurprisingly) expect the film to be shot with state-of-the-art IMAX cameras, possibly a Nolan staple right now, and to be filmed “around the world,” in case that somehow you thought Nolan was going to go. give up his rigorous status in the filming of his biggest and oldest epic yet.
The Odyssey will be released on July 17, 2026.
