In a frankly terrifyingly long explanation of how weapon camo unlocks work in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and the updated Call of Duty Warzone-Zombies-Multiplayer universe, Activision confirmed that Black Ops 6’s camouflage process will remove weapon level requirements, allowing players to start progressing through camouflage challenges from the start.
In a fragment of a blog entry (which I find Easier to read on Battle.net), Activision explains the “epic battle to unlock weapon camos, including Mastery camos for Multiplayer, Zombies, and for the first time, a dedicated Camo Challenge system for Call of Duty: Warzone.” This post also has a bunch of embedded videos showing off the different camos, and CoD sleuths in Modern Warzone stitched a few together in this handy clip:
BREAKING: Black Ops 6 weapon camos will have NO weapon level requirement to start unlocking them. This means you'll be able to start earning camos from the moment you first start using a weapon, or you'll need to level it up to max first before starting the grind. pic.twitter.com/gT3i1hSQoOAugust 29, 2024
“Black Ops veterans should be happy to know that the way many of the camos are unlocked is inspired by previous titles,” the post reads. “Each weapon's camouflage track is split into three categories – featuring a mix of elements from traditional Black Ops camouflage systems of the past, as well as modern Camo Challenge elements seen in recent titles.”
There are three types of weapon camos, each with specific challenges. Here's the simplest breakdown I can think of:
- Military camouflage – Nine “linear” military camouflage styles, for a total of 27 per weapon across all three games, “usually” earned through headshot milestones. Rocket launchers, knives, and shotguns each have their own challenge type.
- Unique camouflages – After completing all nine Military Camouflages, take on two unique challenges, per mode, for a total of six for each weapon. These challenges can be completed in any order, and once completed, these camouflages can be “used with any other weapon” for nine complete Military Camouflages.
- Mastery camouflages – After completing the Military and Unique lineup, take on four challenges to earn Mastery camos (again, a total of 12 per weapon). “While we can't reveal the unlock criteria yet, expect specific and then general challenges that incorporate unlocks across all weapon categories to reveal Mastery camos in all their unparalleled glory,” Activision says.
There's also good news for those who hate level requirements. “Players will no longer need to unlock each weapon's optic 'node' as part of the weapon leveling process,” Activision said. “Instead, players will have access to the optic attachment category from weapon level 1 and will be able to immediately equip any of their previously unlocked favorite class optics when starting a new weapon.”
Call of Duty's voice chat reaches its final form, giving enemy players a way to yell at you inches from your ear using you as a meat shield..
