The developer behind Black Myth: Wukong has given some clarity about the delayed Xbox release, implying it could be years away.
Black Myth: Wukong was one of the biggest games of 2024, winning several industry awards and breaking records upon its release on PlayStation 5 and PC.
Shortly after the game's release, conflicting reports emerged about the whereabouts of the Xbox Series exclusivity agreement with Sony.
Microsoft said the delay was “not due to Xbox platform limitations” in a later statement, but now developer Game Science has explicitly said otherwise.
The statement appears to reference the Xbox Series S's 10GB RAM capacity, which is less than the Xbox Series to be able to be launched.
In June, Game Science said it was “currently optimizing the Xbox Series X/S version to meet our quality standards,” suggesting it was facing some technical hurdles. This wouldn't be the first time the Xbox Series S has been blamed for a game's delay either, as Baldur's Gate 3 faced similar issues related to the console's limitations.
Microsoft will never want to admit that the Xbox Series S is the route of the problem, but it certainly seems like that's the case here. GameCentral has contacted Microsoft for further comment.
Games skipping Xbox have been an issue in the current generation of consoles, with a recent initiative from Microsoft even asking developers why they don't release games on the platform, in an attempt to address concerns.
While the limitations of the Xbox Series S may be partly to blame, the slow sales of the Xbox Series light of the low sales of the console.
Based on Feng Ji's comments, it's unclear whether Black Myth: Wukong will ever come to Xbox if it requires “years” of optimization experience, especially since Microsoft's next console could be announced next year.
