Mumbai: Leading fashion designer Masaba Gupta, who is making her acting debut with her streaming show “Masaba Masaba”, reveals that her mother and veteran actress Neena Gupta had discouraged her from joining the acting world.
Explaining the reason behind her mother's thinking, Masaba said that market forces kept her confined as an actress because the industry functioned differently back then.
In a podcast hosted by Queenie Singh, Masaba said, “They didn't allow me to be an actress. I remember Anupam Kher has an acting school in Mumbai, and I said I want to study acting because I want to be an actress, and they said don't even think about it. You know your look is artistic, international, and almost nonIndian. You will be put in a box. And the industry was very different at that time.
The designeractress further added, “My mother said you will be disappointed, you should do something that you have to apply your mind to and that you can do for the rest of your life. She said, hey, you want to try SNDT? Admissions are open. I went there and I filled my form. My test grade marks were enough to get that form. My marks were good and they gave me admission. They said, okay, take the entrance exam in a week.”
Masaba also said that nepotism is not only limited to the film industry but exists in every industry or profession.
He said, “Nepotism is there in every industry. A lawyer's son becomes a lawyer. A doctor's son becomes a doctor, and their father recommends them. This is the way of the world. It is not only in India but all over the world. Yes, but sometimes I feel that due to nepotism in Bollywood, the wrong people get opportunities.”
He said, “This happens all over the world. But this is a public industry and everyone can see it easily.”
