Fashion designer and actress Masaba Gupta recently spoke about her father, the greatest West Indies cricketer of all time, Vivian Richards, and her emotional response to the racism that he faced.
Masaba argued with Faye D'Souza in an interview how much racism has disturbed his father and later revealed that it brings him to tears talking about his experiences.
Masaba recounted how Vivian Richards faced significant challenges due to her skin color During his professional cricket career, a period when racism was omnipresent in sports and beyond. “I now know why my father felt so strongly about it for so many years,” Masaba shared. “To this day, if you ask him, he will have tears in his eyes or he will have this rage in him… He played professional cricket in an era when the colour of your skin got in the way of your ability to move forward in the world.” He stressed that racism remains a critical issue, noting, “It’s there, everywhere. We will keep talking about it until we fight for it, and it will only happen if we all fight for it,” he added.
Masaba also revealed personal experiences of racism related to her pregnancy. She mentioned how she received unsolicited advice on how to ensure her child had a “lighter” skin tone. Masaba said: “Just yesterday, someone happened to me… saying, ‘You should eat a rasgulla every day because your child has to be lighter than you. ’” She also recounted an incident with a masseuse who suggested that her child “should not be dark.”
