New Delhi . Today is the death anniversary of Abdul Haleem Jafar Khan, known as 'The Wizard of Sitar' in the world of music. Famous sitar player Abdul Haleem Jafar Khan died on January 4, 2017 in Mumbai.
Khan was an artist of Indore Gharana. His father Ustad Jafar Khan was also a good connoisseur of sitar. He was awarded Padmashree, Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards. He was born on February 18, 1927 in Javra, Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He was also known for his 'Zafarkhani Baj' style.
After the death of his father, Abdul Halim Jafar Khan faced financial problems. For this reason he had to go into the film field. Here he got success, and his sitar playing became famous all over India. He surprised people with his sitar playing in national programs of All India Radio and All India Music Conferences.
Abdul Haleem Jafar Khan has also composed melodious ragas like Chakandhun, Kalpana, Madhyami and Khusrubani. Apart from this, he also popularized some southern ragas in North India. Had also gone abroad several times through cultural delegation.
Famous sitar player Abdul Haleem Jafar Khan was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2006, Shikhar Samman by Madhya Pradesh Government in 1991, Gaurav Award by Maharashtra Government in 1990, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 and Padmashree in 1970.
