There are holidays in all private and government banks in Karnataka on Monday. All banks are closed on 18th November. Apart from banks, all schools and government offices are also closed in the state. In fact, holidays have been declared in institutions in the state on the occasion of the birth anniversary of poet and saint Kanakdas. Karnataka observes Kanakadasa Jayanti as a public holiday, hence all banks, schools and government offices in the state will remain closed today.
Day of devotion and cultural importance
According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Kanakadasa Jayanti, a day of devotion and cultural significance for the Kannada people, is being celebrated on 18 November this year. Celebrated on the 18th day of the month of Kartik, the day is dedicated to remembering the teachings and contributions of Saint Kanakadas, a 16th century poet, philosopher and social reformer. His followers across the state organize prayers, rituals and cultural programs on this special occasion.

Saint Kanakadasa was born in a Kuruba (shepherd) family on December 3, 1509. Born as Thimmappa Nayaka, Kanakadasa was initially a warrior. His life took a spiritual turn after he miraculously survived serious injuries in the war and later met Saint Vyasatirtha, a prominent leader of the Krishna Matha in Udupi. Inspired by the teachings of Vyasatirtha, he gave up material pursuits and devoted his life to spiritual devotion and social reform.
