Passport is the most important document for traveling abroad. Without this you cannot apply for visa. Passport is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs. For this you can also apply online. If you also feel the need to get a passport made or you are going on a trip abroad and you do not have a passport, then you can apply for it. Before this you will have to work on your documents. That means you will have to prepare the relevant documents, only then you will be able to apply. Come, let us understand here which documents you should have.
List of documents for new passport in India
- Aadhar card
- Any of the following documents as address proof
- Photocopy of passbook of active bank account in any public sector bank, private sector bank or regional rural banks.
- water bill/electricity bill
- election photo identity card
- Landline or postpaid mobile bill
- Proof of gas connection
- Photocopy of spouse's passport (first and last page of passport containing family details and name of the applicant as spouse of the passport holder)
- Certificate from employer of reputed companies on letterhead
- Proof of Age School Leaving Certificate
- Birth certificate issued by a Municipal Corporation or Registrar of Births and Deaths or any other prescribed authority empowered under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 in India
- There must be a declaration from the head of the child care home/orphanage on official letterhead confirming the date of birth of the applicant.
Any of the following documents as birth certificate
Policy bonds issued by public life insurance corporations/organizations bearing the date of birth of the applicant. Proof of service record of the applicant (in case of Government employees) or pay pension order (retired Government employees) duly attested/certified by the officer/in-charge of administration of the concerned Ministry/Department of the applicant. Driving License and PAN Card. Election photo identity card.
When it comes to marriage, divorce and separation
- If the applicant is married or wants to add the name of husband or wife in the passport, then a marriage certificate or joint photo declaration signed by both husband and wife as per Annexure 'J' is required.
- If the spouse's name is to be removed, the divorce order/decree papers should be there. If the name of the spouse is to be changed, then first the death certificate and remarriage certificate in the name of the spouse or a joint photo declaration signed by both the husband and wife as per Annexure 'J' is required.
- For change of surname by female applicants after marriage/divorce, marriage certificate or joint photo declaration signed by both husband and wife as per Annexure 'J' is required. Divorce order/decree (if name/surname change is based on divorce) may be required. In case of complete change in name after marriage, the standard name change procedure should be followed.
If the applicant is a minor
According to the official website of Passport Seva, it is assumed that the consent of both parents is available, unless specified. For minor applicants, current address proof document in the name of the parents can be submitted. If the parents have a passport, it is advisable to take the original and self-attested copy of the parent's passport to the Passport Seva Kendra. For minor applicants, the documents can be attested by parents. Minor applicants are eligible for Non-ECR (Non Immigration Check Required) until they attain the age of 18 years.
ECR/ECNR
ECR means Immigration Check Required and ECNR means No Immigration Check Required. ECR status will be printed in the passport of applicants falling in ECR category. For those falling in non-ECR category, there will be no special mention in the passport. The practice of affixing non-ECR (earlier ECNR) stamps has been discontinued.
