The government is going to implement new rules to improve road safety and enforcement accuracy across the country. Under the new rule, mandatory verification and stamping of traffic radar devices will now be necessary. The government is ready to implement the new rules. The Legal Metrology Division of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has finalized the draft rules after extensive consultation with stakeholders including the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology, regional reference laboratories, manufacturers and vehicle certification organizations, PTI reported.
Rules will be notified soon
According to the news, the ministry said in a statement that the suggestions received during different consultations are carefully examined and the rules will be notified soon. The new rules, which come under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, will apply to microwave Doppler radar equipment widely used to measure the speed of vehicles on roads. Under the new framework all speed measurement devices will have to undergo verification and receive official seal of approval before deployment.

Why was there a need for new rules?
There has been an alarming growth in road accidents in India. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 461,312 road accidents were recorded in the country in 2022, resulting in 168,491 deaths and 443,366 injuries. These figures show an increase of 11.9% in accidents, 9.4% in fatalities and 15.3% in injuries compared to 2021.
