India India's largest telecom company Reliance Jio has requested telecom regulator TRAI to bring a revised consultation paper on spectrum allocation for satellite communications. The company has alleged that TRAI's current consultation paper ignores the important aspect of ensuring a level playing field between satellite and terrestrial telecom services. Reliance Jio has raised these issues in a letter to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chief Anil Kumar Lahoti.
Reliance Jio wrote a letter to TRAI on October 4
Jio, led by India's richest man Mukesh Ambani, has sought amendments in the consultation paper related to the “Terms and Conditions of Spectrum Allocation for Satellite-Based Commercial Communication Services”. Telecom company Reliance Jio, in this letter written on October 4, has said that the important issue of ensuring level playing field between satellite-based and terrestrial access-based services has been completely ignored in TRAI's consultation paper.
What else did Jio say on the current consultation paper?
Jio said that due to omission on this issue, telecom stakeholders will not be able to provide relevant details to TRAI. The telecom regulator on September 27 had launched a consultation process to explore the methodology and pricing of spectrum allocation to satellite companies to provide calling, messaging, broadband and other services in the country.
TRAI had fixed the date of 18th and 25th October on the consultation paper.
TRAI has fixed October 18 for comments on the consultation paper and October 25 for counter comments. The decision on spectrum pricing and allocation methodology will pave the way for satellite-based broadband services from companies like Elon Musk-owned Starlink, Bharti Group-backed OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications across India.
