Essar Group co-founder Shashi Ruia passed away after prolonged illness. Family sources said that Ruia died on November 25 at 11.55 pm in Mumbai. According to PTI news, he had returned from America for treatment about a month ago. His mortal remains will be kept at Ruia House for last darshan from 1 pm to 3 pm on Tuesday. The funeral procession will leave from Ruia House for the Hindu Worli crematorium at 4 pm.

Shashi Ruia is survived by his wife Manju and two sons Prashant and Anshuman. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolence on the demise of Ruia and said that he was a great person of the industry. His visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence transformed India's business landscape. His demise is quite sad. He set high standards for innovation and development. He always had many ideas. Always discussed how we can make our country better.

80-year-old industrialist Shashi Ruia, along with his brother Ravikant Ruia (aka Ravi Ruia), founded Essar Group in 1969, a company involved in business ranging from metal to technology. Shashikant Ruia started his career in the year 1965 under the guidance of his father Nand Kishore Ruia and laid the foundation of Essar in 1969 by constructing an outer breakwater at Chennai Port. Essar Group today does business in many sectors including steel, oil refining, exploration and production, telecom, power and construction.
