Tata Group-led airline Air India has taken disciplinary action and suspended 10 of its cabin crew members. These members were instigating other members against the revised policy of the airline, on which Air India took action. According to PTI news, the revised policy also requires cabin crew members to share rooms during layovers. According to PTI news, a source gave this information on Monday.
The revised policy will be effective from December 1
According to the news, ahead of Vistara's merger with itself next month, Air India has introduced a revised policy for cabin crew members, which will be effective from December 1. The All India Cabin Crew Association has opposed the requirement of room sharing, terming it illegal, inconsistent with the law, wrong and void ab initio on several fronts. It has also sought the intervention of the Labor Ministry to resolve the issue. In this backdrop, the Tata Group-owned airline has taken action against some cabin crew members.
Total number of employees will be around 25,000
The source said 10 cabin crew members have been suspended for inciting others to protest against the policy. There was no official comment from Air India on this issue. Loss-making Air India was acquired by the Tata Group in January 2022 and since then, several changes have been made as part of efforts to boost the full-service carrier. The total number of employees in Air India and Vistara will be around 25,000. Of these, approximately 12,000 will be cabin crew members.
Urge to respect industrial dispute
The association has also written to Air India chief Campbell Wilson, urging him not to violate the existing status quo and respect the sanctity of the industrial tribunal and the pending industrial dispute on this issue. It has sought hotel accommodation and accommodation conditions as per the accommodation policy for pilots as per previous agreements and tribunal decisions. Under the new policy, effective from December 1, members will be required to share rooms during layovers, except for cabin officers and those operating ultra-long-haul flights ahead of the November 11 merger with Vistara.
