Mumbai . Veteran producerdirector Shyam Benegal, who gave a new dimension to Indian cinema with brilliant films, had a strong hold on the small screen as well. He left behind a rich legacy of TV shows. Serials that tug at the heartstrings and connect with the soul of India.
Yatra: Shyam Benegal made his small screen debut with the TV serial 'Yatra', which came in 1986. The show based on travels had a total of 15 episodes. The special thing is that the entire show was filmed on Himsagar Express. Om Puri was accompanied by artists like Neena Gupta, Ila Arun, Mohan Gokhale and Harish Patel on the journey.
Katha Sagar: After 'Yatra', Shyam Benegal made a TV show named 'Katha Sagar'. This show, which released in 1986, had a total of 44 episodes. Artists like Saeed Jafri, Supriya Pathak were seen with Pankaj Berry in 'Katha Sagar'.
Bharat Ek Khoj: After 'Yatra' and 'Katha Sagar', Shyam Benegal brought the show 'Bharat Ek Khoj' based on the book 'Discovery of India' by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the year 1988. The show had 53 episodes. The show featured actors like Om Puri, Roshan Seth, Tom Alter along with Sadashiv Amrapurkar.
Amaravati Ki Kathayen: Shyam Benegal brought the TV show 'Amarvati Ki Kathayen' in 1995. Neena Gupta was seen with Raghubir Yadav in the show.
Samvidhan: Shyam Benegal brought a show named 'Samvidhan' in the year 2014. This 10 episode show was aired on Rajya Sabha TV.
Shyam Benegal was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976 and Padma Bhushan in 1991 by the government. In the year 2007, he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award of Indian cinema. He was the only film director to win the National Film Award for Best Hindi Feature Film five times.
Apart from this, Shyam Benegal was honored with the Excellence in Cinema Award of South Asian Cinema Foundation in the year 2012. He was given this award in London for his significant contribution to Indian cinema.
Apart from films and TV shows, he also made documentaries and short films. In this, 'Nehru' (1985) and 'Satyajit Ray, Filmmaker' also received the National Film Award.
