Gearbox narrative director Sam Winkler is interested in trimming the Borderlands series' notorious “bathroom humor” for Borderlands 4.
ICYMI, a new Borderlands 4 trailer debuted during The Game Awards 2024 and revealed all sorts of new weapons, gadgets, and baddies. The trailer also reignited conversation about Borderlands 4 in general, resulting in a pretty insightful conversation between Winkler and some fans on Twitter (thanks, PC Gamer).
One big criticism of Borderlands 3 is that it's full of, pardon my expression, poop jokes. Does anyone remember the excrement cultivation thing?
Still, Winkler said in response to a fan who noticed the darker tone of the Borderlands 4 trailers that he can't say anything substantial about the game's content, but reiterated his stance on “healthcare humor.”
“I'm not at liberty to speak much about BL4's content, but I remain steadfast in my criticism of BL3's overabundance of toilet humor.
“I'm not going to say there are no bathrooms, but if the word skibidi appears in the game under my watch, I will cry real tears,” Winkler said. “Paul Tassi joked that we were going to have a weapon called the Hawk 2A and a fellow developer asked me if it was real and I wanted to put my hand in the sink.”
Suffice it to say, don't expect Borderlands 4 to let you “use the Poop Poop Farty 4000 while completing the mission to clean the port-a-potties with my Skibidi toilet,” as one fan jokingly suggested.
I'm not going to say there are no bathrooms, but if the word skibidi appears in the game under my supervision, I will cry real tears. Meanwhile, The hidden messages in the new Borderlands 4 trailer have already been decoded, leaving the community with yet another enigma.
