Situation worsened after heavy rains in Sri Lanka, more than 3 lakh people affected – Top News Bulletin


Colombo: At least 12 people have died and more than 3.30 lakh people have been affected in Sri Lanka due to inclement weather following heavy rains in the south-west Bay of Bengal. Officials have given information about this on Thursday. Eight of the dead are said to be from the eastern district of Ampara. Officials said the inclement weather was a result of a deep pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal, which mainly affected the eastern province.

Lakhs of people were affected

Disaster Management Center (DMC) officials said that as of 8 am local time on Thursday, more than 3,30,000 people from more than 98,000 families in 21 districts have been affected. The meteorological center has predicted more heavy rains till Friday, while the National Building Research Institute (NBRI) on Wednesday issued a landslide warning for 4 out of 9 provinces. More than 80 houses were completely damaged due to floods and landslides.

Army deployed

Officials said more than 25,000 people have been shifted to more than 260 shelters in safer places. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake ordered the deployment of military personnel to provide relief to the affected. Earlier on Wednesday, at least six Colombo-bound flights were diverted to other airports due to heavy rains. 75 mm of rain fell in the 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. and strong winds lashed much of the island. The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for several low-lying areas in the Kelani River Basin and Kala Oya Basin, which will remain in effect until Friday morning. (Language)
