New Delhi. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has reacted to India head coach Gautam Gambhir's reaction to his comments about Virat Kohli's form ahead of the BorderGavaskar series, and said he is not surprised by Gambhir's reaction. He called him “a man of fiery temper.”
During last week's episode of ICC Review, Ponting had expressed concern over Kohli's form, saying, “I saw a statistic about Virat the other day which said he has only scored two (three) Test centuries in the last five years. It doesn't seem right to me, but if it's true, it's a matter of concern.”
Asked about Ponting's comments during the press conference before his departure, Gambhir hit back, “What does Ricky Ponting have to do with Indian cricket? He should be talking about Australia.” Speaking to 7News, clarifying his comments that angered the India head coach, Ponting said, “I said I would be concerned (about his form). But I think if you ask Virat, I am sure Virat will be a little worried that he has not been able to score centuries like in previous years.”
He said, “It was not a dig at him in any way. I actually followed it up by saying that he had played well in Australia and he would be keen to make a comeback here. So, it's surprising how littleknown Things get cut, but he is a class player and has played well in Australia in the past.
The Australian legend further said that he was a bit surprised by the reaction to his comments, but that was to be expected from Gambhir. Ponting said, “I was surprised to read the reaction, but I know coach Gautam Gambhir… he is very aggressive, so I was not surprised that he said something.”
