Justice Sanjiv Khanna heard 45 cases on the very first day after assuming charge as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI). He thanked the lawyers and bar officials for their good wishes. CJI Khanna entered the Chief Justice's courtroom in the Supreme Court in the afternoon after being administered the oath by President Draupadi Murmu in a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

He was given a grand welcome by senior lawyers of the Bar including former Attorney General and senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi. “I wish you a successful tenure as Chief Justice,” senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi said at the start of the day's proceedings.
Other lawyers also gave good wishes
Rohatgi had on Friday said that after more than a decade and CJI YK Sabharwal (late), the Supreme Court will get another Chief Justice from the Delhi High Court. Other lawyers present in the court room also wished the Chief Justice.

'Thank you,' the Chief Justice said to the lawyers gathered in court room number one along with Justice Sanjay Kumar in the afternoon. When once the member raised the issue relating to the sequence of cases listed in a day for hearing, the Chief Justice said that it was in his notice and he would consider it.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice refused to hear the state government's appeal against the arbitration award. In this, the state government was asked to make payment under promised tax incentives to a Mauritius-based company.
Earlier, Justice Khanna took oath in English 'in the name of God' at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Khanna, born on May 14, 1960, will serve as the Chief Justice of India for a little more than six months and will retire on May 13, 2025, after completing 65 years of age.
DY Chandrachud retired from the post of CJI
Khanna replaced Justice DY Chandrachud who retired on Sunday. Apart from Justice Chandrachud, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and former Chief Justice JS Khehar were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
