Marvel vs. Capcom 4 seems inevitable: here's who should be in it

Marvel and Capcom have a rich history of collaboration dating back to The Punishera Final Fight-style side-scrolling beat'em-up that was released in arcades in 1993. The companies would quickly team up again to create a pair of 2D fighting games. X-Men: Children of the Atom and marvel superheroes.

Then the real crossover happened: Capcom's fighting game royalty and Marvel Comics superheroes and villains faced off in X-Men vs. Street Fightera landmark fighting game that started a decades-long series of Marvel vs. Capcom.

With the Marvel vs. Capcom Fight Collection By bringing MvC back into the conversation, talk of a new game in the crossover franchise has increased. Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto said that the developers have “big dreams” and that “there is an opportunity for a new Marvel vs Capcom game” in an interview with Dexerto.

What would be a Marvel vs. Capcom 4* seems? It's probably something of a course correction for the franchise, but gameplay details are best left to the fighting game experts at Capcom. But some people at Polygon have some solid ideas about who should be in a theoretical position. Marvel vs. Capcom 4based on the franchise's past and where Marvel and Capcom's respective franchises are headed.

Here are our picks for our dream (but based on reality) Marvel vs. Capcom 4 cast.

*[Ed. note: For the purposes of this article, we are ignoring Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, just like the rest of the MvC audience.]

Let's get this out of the way: Street Fighter ryu and Chun-Li I need to be here. They have been in the Marvel vs. franchise. Capcom since the beginning and are the most famous faces of the Street Fighter franchise. And even though Darkstalkers is dead, everyone, especially Capcom, loves it morrigan. She is a lock.

From the non-fighting game side of Capcom's catalog, we're betting that mega manDevil May Cry danteand Ace Attorney Phoenix Wright will be represented in the MvC4 list. a hunter monster hunterCapcom's largest franchise, is also closed. And to represent the Resident Evil franchise, we chose Leon S. Kennedy. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine have had their chance, so it's time to Resident Evil 4It's Leon.

As for our other picks, we picked some familiar Capcom favorites and some newcomers that can help spice things up:

  • Cammy from Street Fighter: The ever-popular Cammy hasn't had much representation in MvC, but she brings a unique and fun playstyle to the roster.
  • Zangief from Street Fighter: You need a big guy, and if it's not Mike Haggar, it's Zangief.
  • Frank West from Dead Rising: Sometimes you need a guy with a huge toolbox to fight with. That's Frank West.
  • Countess Alcina Dimitrescu (also known as Lady D) of Resident of the bad town: We have a big guy, how about a big woman? Lady D has a lot of playing potential.
  • Ada Wong from Resident Evil: Look, Resident Evil is very popular and Ada could be a kind of Spider-Man on Capcom's side, thanks to her spy devices.
  • Lucas from Street Fighter: Yes, this list is heavy on Street Fighter, but Capcom seems to really want Luke to be the new face of the fighting game franchise.
  • Arturo from Ghosts 'n Goblins: Arthur's arsenal practically guarantees him a spot on the roster. MvC4 list.
  • Commando Captain: The star of one of Capcom's coolest fighting games, Captain Commando is just a cool superhero for the non-Marvel side.

Finally, here are our riskiest picks for who else we want to see on Capcom's side:

  • Marisa from Street Fighter: I'm biased here, because Marisa is my main street fighter 6but I love his character design and the way he throws his hands. Capcom's roster has no shortage of characters who can get down to business, but Marisa's bulky physique and boxing skills give her a different approach than someone like Luke or Zangief. —Pete Volk
  • Claire Redfield from Resident Evil: It seems more likely that Claire's brother Chris or even Leon Kennedy will be included, but if you ask me, Claire deserves her spot for having a slightly different backstory. Instead of having official military or police training, Claire presumably learned how to run ammunition operations from her family members and that's it. She is an ordinary woman who jumped into zombie action because someone I had to do it. I love that about her. —maddy wed
  • Rathalos from Monster Hunter: Monster Hunter is incredibly important to Capcom, but MvC4 should go beyond the simple representation of hunters. Let's bring the monsters here too, starting with Rathalos. If Abigail can appear in street fighter 5 and Galactus can be played on Ultimate MvC3why not? —Michael McWhertor

Yeah Marvel vs. Capcom 4 happens, it is necessary to atone for one of Marvel vs Capcom: InfinityThe greatest sins. He needs to bring the X-Men back. Infinite was released at a time when Marvel apparently wanted to deprioritize the X-Men in favor of their then-popular MCU stars, the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. But the X-Men are back, thanks to X-Men '97 and Deadpool and Wolverine. That's why Glutton, Magnetoand Storm I need to get back to the MvC list. Oh and deadpoolalso.

The Marvel side also needs some superhero mainstays, such as iron man, spider manand Captain America. Which Spider-Man and which Captain America are up for debate, but some version of those classic heroes needs to be represented.

On the side of the villains, doctor doom Not only is he an enduring Marvel villain and MvC mainstay, but he's also at the heart of Marvel Studios' future film plans. Doom is an easy lock.

Here are our best guesses as to who else will fill out the Marvel side of the MvC4 list.

  • Poison: Venom is quite popular, playing the role of Big Guy for the Marvel side and can perform all sorts of fun shapeshifts.
  • Mr. Fantastic: Marvel Studios has a new film franchise to launch, and who better than Dhalsim/Shuma Gorath-like Reed Richards?
  • The thing: See above, plus we need someone to replace Hulk.
  • Silver surfer: Potentially overpowered, but cosmic powers and surfboard-based attacks feel like an incredibly cool combination.
  • Shang-Chi: A simple fighting game for the Marvel side with flashy magical powers and the potential to summon a dragon?
  • Doctor Strange: Mystical powers, teleportation portals, and illusions make Steve a pretty decent choice for Marvel's side.
  • Groot and rocket: Combining these two as a single character would create an interesting moveset and visual approach, while also paying homage to two of the most popular characters from the previous era of the MCU (without cluttering the roster with too many). Groot punches while Rocket shoots? It seems like a perfect combination to me.
  • Phoenix: We need more X-Men (and more women) on Marvel's side, and Jean is always a fun choice.

As for our Marvel deep cuts and oddities, here's who we want to appear MvC4.

  • Howard the Duck: Listen to me. I have no real loyalty to Howard the Duck; I haven't read any of his material or seen his movie. But this is exactly the kind of crazy trick I want. MvC4 to achieve it. Howard has nothing to promote, so his inclusion would be free of marketing concerns and he would look absolutely ridiculous in front of many of the other people on the list. I only have one request: he should also be the strongest character in the game. —photovoltaic
  • Kamala Khan: Kamala's powers are easy to imagine in a fighting game (i.e. her original powers from the comic Dhalsim and Mister Fantastic), so it's a great idea from a “fun to play” standpoint. But this is not just about that. Her comic book stories are great, she had one of the best MCU TV shows that not enough people watched and she was the best part of the wondersthat even less people looked. She was also the best part of Marvel's Avengersa game that almost no one played. She is always the best part of whatever she is in and deserves to be seen. —Maddy Myers
  • She-Hulk: Hulk, the version of Bruce Banner, has been a pillar of the Marvel vs. Capcom from the beginning. Give the man a break! Since we already have Thing on our dream list as the big baddie on Marvel's side, it's She-Hulk's time to shine. She's strong, has a lot more personality than her cousin, and can break the fourth wall in fun ways (like Deadpool). Put Jen in the game! —Michael McWhertor
