New DelhiFormer Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh is doubtful whether Mumbai Indians will retain Rohit Sharma ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, the spinner, who won three IPL titles for Mumbai under Rohit's captaincy, feels that the opening batsman will be retained after winning the T20 World Cup 2024.
Apart from Rohit, the veteran cricketer believes that the franchise will retain captain Hardik Pandya, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, batsman Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma to keep its core group intact ahead of the mega auction.
Speaking to Star Sports about a possible IPL retention for Mumbai Indians, Harbhajan said, “Mumbai Indians is a team that has not performed well in the last twothree years. They are a champion and a very good team where As far as I know, they will definitely focus on building the team keeping the future in mind, but it does not mean that they will not include experienced players this year, they made Hardik Pandya the captain and I think. He will definitely be retained. Jasprit Bumrah will be retained. But the question is whether Rohit Sharma will be retained.”
The 44yearold spinner replaced Nehal Wadhera as Mumbai's final choice under the uncapped category amid six retentions ahead of the October 31 deadline.
Harbhajan said, “Recently Rohit Sharma has won the World Cup as captain, so I think he should be retained in the team and it will happen. In this way there will be four players and if there is a fifth player, then Tilak Verma will be retained in the team. Tilak Verma is one of those players who will prove to be very useful in winning matches for Mumbai Indians in future.
In IPL 2024, fivetime champions Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the table under Pandya's captaincy. The team won just four matches out of 14 league stage matches and remained at the bottom of the table throughout the season.
